Sick and Pissy and Moody and thinking

I am just sitting here, simply because I cannot do anything else. Things that run through my head when I am pissy and sick --- or whatever you want to call it are funny, as in funny strange, not necessarily funny ha ha.

Like:

My mother, and my Father-(my actual dad, not the step variety) used to paint bunnies on my owies with Mercurochrome. (at least I think this is how you spell it). Do you all remember that nasty pinky/orangy/red crap that our parents put on cuts? Anyway, I was very small and I hated that stuff and it burned like you know what, so they would paint a bunny with the little plastic wand that came attached to the lid of the bottle, and that would help me to stop crying. That was really pretty creative of them, I must say. It's also probably one of the very few nice memories I have of my dad from when I was little. Also, we did not call that medicine (the Mercurochrome)by that name..hell, I couldn't have even pronounced it. There was another word for it, but I can't remember it, and it seems to me that it was a normal word that everyone knew, not a word used only in our family (although there were plenty of those, too). Does anyone know what it was called?

Speaking of words that are widely known in my family but mean nothing to others:

Dah-doos = flowers. Courtesy of a two year old Janelle.

Fwigger. This means you drink your juice or milk too fast , coming from swigger, which the very young Craig could not say. But her certainly could DO it...Fwig, I mean.  :)

Be-bop-be-be.  Peanut butter. Jordan was probably only about twelve months old...he talked waaay early (and still hasn't shut up), but that is how it sounded to him and what he demanded standing under the cupboard where it was stored, each and every morning before five am. BE-BOP-BE-BE. There was only a short period of time allotted to get this sandwich, made on one slice of bread and folded in the middle. If the timing was not fast enough, the demands became frantic and LOUD. Let me tell you, that child was starving upon waking, and was fine once he had his sandwich. In fact, both boys woke up that way, and oh so early, that I was happy to give them their early morning snack, a couple of hours before their breakfast. Life was much happier and quieter in those days, once the tummies weren't growling. Oh and one day he asked me for Bop-Be-Be. I was a little perplexed when he clearly didn't want peanut butter on his biscuit at breakfast, but butter. I guess in a twelve month old mind, the missing first BE is rational. Butter/Peanut Butter. Hmmm...

My head feels sick and icky from too much pain medication, but I am not crying now...from pain in my neck and legs. Don't you just love the choices we all make daily?

I think I need a nap.

Dammit I hate when I am not at work when I am supposed to be. I usually drive my two girls in the office crazy but so far, today, I haven't. Maybe when I wake up.  :)

Later, y'all.

Does it not truly stink what your choice is overwhelming, non ending horrible pain or a foggy, listless slightly confused state of being. Suffered all day yesterday to prove to myself I could handle it without pain, accomplished nothing. Tossed and turned till 2 am and finally gave in and took the drugs. What are you gonna do, I am right there with you girlfriend. Hope you feel better after your nap.

Oh Jamie, I do feel so sorry for all the pain you're in. I went through a stage when I had a slipped vertabrea some 20 yrs ago, the pain was terrible, in the end I had to have surgery, but that has left me with neck problems and shoulders which need a cortisone shot every six months, luckily I am not that bad painwise but I do feel so sorry for you.
Take care.
Yvonne.

We always called it Mercurochrome. I don't remember another name for it. So I will be interested if someone posts other names.

I know the feeling of wanting to be at work instead of home miserable.

I hope you get your nap and then you call those girls up and drive them crazy, like you should! :-)

It was iodine. Simple and effective. My grandparents would drink a drop of it in their water every day to get it into their systems...something unheard of today. It's in our drinking water as floride now.

The things my grandparents, then parents, did for health is now thought to be unhealthy and suspicious at best, but it makes a comeback occasionally, marketed under a different name and with all kinds of warnings on the labels.

restatement: iodine is in our salt now. What I wonder is: HOW did our grandparents automatically KNOW what has only now become standard? I'm sure that iodine in salt was only considered after many years of tests and regulations, but how did they "know" they needed it? Didn't kill them either.

I was thinking about your last night. I don't think I could handle constant pain with as much courage and grace as you do. You inspire me. I'm doubly sorry you have to suffer, but I am glad you have an outlet in blogging that allows you some release in writing. That is a good thing that many do not have or use. Keep on writing, hon.

Iodine was what I was thinking also...even though they are two different products. Mercurochrome was supposed to "sting less". I remember mom got rid of a wart on my thumb by putting iodine on it several times a day....it eventually dropped off. This was eons before any such meds were available for warts. The bunny idea was a cute one. Just thinking about it....betcha there were plenty of germs on the glass dobber from all the people who used that bottle....but we never thought about that way back then.

We called it Monkey's Blood - kind of gross - but that's what I remember it being called.

Love you Aunt Jamie! Hope you're feeling a little better by this point. I loved reading about the kids' words! We have a few of those that have been passed down that we still use! I remember Ben calling guitars "Rain No Mores" and we still call them that sometimes. I like that you shared a memory because I've been thinking a lot about memories from when I was little too. Big hugs!!! Hope to see you soon!

I like your family words. I think every family has some of them. We have Awfuls, for waffles. My little guy couldn't say it right and just kept calling them awfuls. Oh and when he was about two, he would constantly interrupt people talking cuz he is a chatterbug! I taught him to tap someone on the knee and ask "Can i tell you something please?" and then wait for their response. Well he asked it sooo much and sooo often it became Kai tell you sumthin? Kai, kai, kai? (like a K with an eye mushed together). He is now almost 11 and still says it like that.

And I, too, right now and feeling the ick from the pain meds. I just finished writing in the novel for the night and I'm hurtin like crazy.

And yes, I hear you on the irritating tens thing. I soo understand it. :)

Gentle hugs. And you know what? I am grateful for you.

Mercurochrome didn't sting. Iodine did. Mercurochrome was substituted for Iodine in our house for that reason. I remember having it painted on too!
